DDoS protection and Jisc’s CSIRT
Every Janet-connected organisation gets Jisc’s Foundation DDoS mitigation and access to the Jisc CSIRT. Here is what they do, their support hours, and the optional upgrades for 24/7 cover and for protecting DNS, websites and VPNs.

At a glance
- Foundation DDoS mitigation is provided automatically to every Janet-connected organisation.
- Suspicious traffic is re-routed through a scrubbing centre; RDP is geo-IP filtered unless you opt out.
- Business-hours support is 08:00–18:00 Monday to Friday, with on-call cover at other times; Foundation plus adds 24/7 protection.
- The Jisc CSIRT is included in membership: incident coordination, DoS monitoring, advice and vulnerability alerts.
Foundation DDoS mitigation
A distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack floods a network or service with traffic to knock it offline. Jisc says “all Janet IP connections are protected by our Foundation DDoS mitigation and CSIRT services”.
How it works, according to Jisc:
- suspicious traffic is re-routed through a scrubbing centre;
- geo-IP filtering restricts remote desktop (RDP, TCP port 3389 only) — organisations can opt out by emailing irt@jisc.ac.uk.
Support hours

Optional upgrades
- Foundation plus — 24/7 protection.
- Critical services protection — for your DNS, website and VPN, with new geo-blocking options.
Both appear as optional extras in Jisc’s FE catalogue.
The Jisc CSIRT
Jisc’s computer security incident response team is included in membership. It provides incident coordination, denial-of-service monitoring and mitigation, advice, a knowledge base and vulnerability alerts.
- Phone: 0300 999 2340 (08:00–18:00, Monday to Friday)
- Email: irt@jisc.ac.uk
Jisc says it works with the NCSC, GÉANT, FIRST and Trusted Introducer, and that it is CREST-assured for the Cyber Incident Response standard.
